The next generation of Erosion

The Erosion_2 node in Gaea 2 is a powerful new erosion algorithm designed to enhance terrain shaping capabilities beyond the traditional Classic Erosion.

Erosion_2 provides additional controls and features, allowing for more flexibility and realism in terrain generation. It is compatible with Classic Erosion, giving users the freedom to combine both methods for varied results.

Despite its complexity, Erosion_2 remains user-friendly and delivers deterministic results with up to 10x faster performance, even on the CPU.

Key Features

  • Expanded Erosion Options: New parameters for finer control over terrain shaping.

  • Enhanced Terrain Shapes: Generates terrain features previously unattainable with Classic Erosion.

  • Character Preservation: Retains more of the original terrain characteristics during the erosion process.

  • Flexible Workflow: Works seamlessly alongside Classic Erosion for versatile erosion effects.

  • Improved Usability: Simplified controls allow for faster tuning.

  • Deterministic Performance: Consistent, repeatable results without performance loss.

Using Erosion_2

The Erosion_2 node offers extensive control over the erosion process, allowing users to shape terrain with a range of new options and refinements.

General settings like Duration, Downcutting, and Erosion Scale enable users to control the intensity, depth, and scale of erosion effects, allowing for nuanced simulations that mimic long-term natural processes or more dramatic, localized transformations.

Further refinement is available through sediment management options and shape settings. The sediment discharge parameters balance the movement of fine and coarse materials, affecting how smoothly or ruggedly the terrain evolves.

Adjustments to the Shape and Detail Scale allow for intricate terrain formations, from subtle erosive details to pronounced features, enhancing the realism or stylization of the landscape.

Together, these settings give users a highly customizable erosion tool that preserves the original terrain's character while offering new artistic possibilities.
